Instruments of Movement (IOM) (founded in January 2002 by Artistic Director James Morrow) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, multi-cultural contemporary dance company organized to enrich the cultural environment of the community, further intercultural understanding, and broaden the appreciation of dance as an art form by producing dance performances and workshops. IOM conducts residencies focused on the power of creative; expert art making and compelling performances to bring communities together, on a common ground, to break commonly known stereotypes about ethnic backgrounds that exist in dance. Public Performances: Award-winning choreography by IOM members as well as commissioned works by established multi-cultural choreographers emerge in solo, ensemble, and full company dances. Informal performances in varied settings are also available. IOM breaks the rules of traditionally strict lines between audience and artist to create an experience unlike any other. Dancers, musicians, poets, visual artists, and especially audience members explore together raw emotions and events in their lives while engaging in the process of creating multi-media dance. Educational Workshops: Teaching and choreographic workshops can provide educational institutions with a number of ways to support the training experiences of their students. IOM is an excellent tool for enlightening the broader community about dance and further intercultural understanding, with post-performance discussions and lecture/demonstrations. Professional Training: Dancers, students, and members of the community and anyone else interested, learn and experience the artistry and desires of dance, as well as choreography, composition, historical viewpoints, and IOM's artistic process. Instruments of Movement is an innovative performance ensemble. One aspect of the company that makes it an ideal choice for residencies is its company members, all of whom, in addition to being trained skilled professionals, are all college graduates with diverse backgrounds in many different fields. |
